Empowered Women, Inspiring Women

Society has gone a long way in allowing women the freedom to express their strengths and abilities in the education and working industry. However, we are just halfway through the journey. There are still quite a few countries that have not advanced with its view on gender equality. According to the World Bank, only six countries – Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Sweden, give men and women equal rights in the working force. Since women make up half of the world’s population, $12 trillion would be added to the global economy by 2025 if there are no gender discriminating laws that hold back women from pursuing their aspired careers in the workforce. (Global Citizen, 2019)

Coco Veda emphasizes great value in women empowerment. We have an all-women operations team that we empower through upskill and training. The support and opportunity that we have offered these women have allowed them to be the breadwinners of their families. All of these women have their story to tell on women empowerment throughout their growth and journey in Coco Veda. We have gathered all their thoughts and personal experiences through the following interview:

Q1) What does women empowerment mean to you?

“Women empowerment is about encouraging individual women to take action towards their career goals.”

All of us have dreams that we aspire to achieve. However, what sets an empowered woman apart from the crowd is her fighting spirit to stay on track no matter the hurdles that come along the journey. It is simple to say you have a dream, but sometimes we need to ask ourselves how passionate we are to achieve that dream. It takes a much deeper purpose and meaning to be firm enough to stay until the end. There are a lot of challenges that can try to stop you such as gender discrimination or lack of self-confidence. Our Coco Veda team believes that it is not enough to have a career goal. The most important part of being an empowered woman is taking action towards that goal no matter the circumstance or challenges that may come along the way. As we go forth and win through the odds that do not want us to succeed, we inspire other women who have their own career goals too that they are fighting to achieve.

Q2) What initial difficulties did you face when you started working?

“In the beginning, it was difficult to carry the boxes, especially the heavier ones because all of us are women.”

There are a lot of stereotypes that we hear growing up in a very opinionated society. Oftentimes, the statements that we hear repeatedly can get into our heads and we start to believe that they are true. This is especially evident when it comes to gender stereotypes. For instance, studies have shown that only 22% of AI professionals are women, for every female film character, there are 2.24 men, and women are 47% more likely to suffer severe injuries in car crashes because safety features are designed for men. The truth of the matter is people have created this unhealthy association to assign roles to a gender. As a woman or man, growing up and being told that they are more or less capable of doing a certain career or hobby because of their gender, will take away a lot of confidence even before they attempt to try the task. If we portray tasks to be more gender neutral, then we as a society can achieve so much more having both men and women work together with their full capabilities and confidence. 

Q3) Do you think working in Coco Veda has empowered you?

“Yes, because Coco Veda has entrusted me to handle the responsibilities in work and be accountable for my tasks.”

A great step to empowering women is believing in a woman’s capabilities. Women should be given opportunities to prove themselves. However, not all women around the world are fortunate enough to showcase their potential. In Equatorial Guinea, women still require their husband’s permission to sign a contract. Women in Bhutan and Pakistan are not allowed to sign their own names if they register a company or get a loan when they start their own business. They have to sign these documents with their father or husband’s name. Gender should not be a hindrance to a person’s freedom to work or attain something for themselves. We all have something to offer on the table and we need each other’s strengths and expertise to achieve greater success. As a woman, we also deserve to receive recognition for our hard work and not be neglected or hidden just because of our gender.

Q4) How do you feel about being the breadwinner of your family? How does your family feel about this?

“I feel proud to have a permanent job to give and provide for my family on a daily basis. However, sometimes I also feel sad because I do not have much time to spend with them and they live far away. As for my family, they feel very happy and grateful for my sacrifice in order to support them.”

I think we can see the gradual change in society’s perspective about gender roles. There has been an increase in the share of women heads of household in married couples, from 21.8% in 1990 to 46.1% in 2019. Over the years, families have become more and more receptive to women breadwinners. The Coco Veda team is a great example of an empowered woman who is willing to sacrifice being away from her loved ones in order to provide for their needs.

Q5) Why do you think so many women are still reluctant to go out and work?

“They might be weak-hearted and are afraid to face the challenges of work.”

Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will. I am sure you have heard of this statement before and if you have not, take some time to ponder about what this short sentence is trying to imply. When we choose to hold ourselves back from doing something because of fear, we will always be troubled with the words “What if…” in the back of our minds. Another question we can ask is “Why are we so afraid?”. I think this would lead back to the topic of confidence. People are afraid because they don’t feel secure about their abilities. They are doubting that they are good enough to handle the tasks that lie ahead. This is why training and upskilling women, like our Coco Veda operations team, is very crucial. When women are equipped with the knowledge and training, they will feel more confident to do the task at hand. It is also important to support each other, sharing what we know and in turn, empowering the other women around us. Confidence is contagious, so being confident alone will not only be beneficial for you, but it can also inspire other women around you to be confident in themselves.

Q6) Would you like to say something to the women in society who are dominated by men and are scared to go out to work?

“What men can do, women can also do. We have to begin with knowing our strengths and abilities first, and then honing them so that we can be more confident with ourselves in pursuing our desired careers.”


Men’s Skincare Routine

Historically, women were traditionally more responsible for paying more attention to their skincare routines. On the other hand, traditionally men were more concerned about wealth and possibly their dress code. However, in the 21st century, these traditional beliefs and views have evolved. 


Over the years, male grooming experts have shared that men have started paying more attention to themselves. So, you must be wondering, what is fueling this change? There are predominantly three reasons: 

  • Awareness amongst men on personal grooming has grown (Beauty Packaging, 2020)
  • Increased disposable income
  • Addressing common lifestyle concerns and experiences such as oily skin, enlarged pores and maintaining a beard (Friday Magazine, 2017). 


Common skincare concerns for Men 

Razor Burn 

1. Coco Veda recommends washing your face with lukewarm water before cleansing with our Chamomile and Rose Facial Wash to soften and moisturise the skin. 

2. Best practice is to exfoliate before shaving, rather than after. Exfoliating with our Bamboo Facial Scrub removes dirt and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, which keeps your skin clean, unclogs your pores which allows the razor to glide more smoothly over the skin.

Singapore Green Plan 2030: Preparing for a Resilient Future

What is the Singapore Green Plan?

The Singapore Green Plan is an entire nation movement to advance Singapore’s agenda on sustainable development with concrete targets over the next ten years (SG Green Plan, 2021). Furthermore, the Green Targets aim to strengthen Singapore’s commitment towards the UN SDGs and Paris Agreement (Channel News Asia, 2021). 

What are some of the targets?

 Some examples of the targets for the Singapore Green Plan, include: 


  • Seek green growth to create new jobs, transform industries, and harness sustainability as a competitive advantage
  • Create business and job opportunities in sectors such as green finance, sustainability consultancy, verification, credits trading, and risk management
  • Be a leading centre for Green Finance in Asia and globally
  • Anchor new investments and grow local businesses to ride the green wave


  • Plant 1 million trees, to sequester 78,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide which improves the quality of air and having cooler shade 
  • Allot 50% more land – around 200 hectares, for nature parks. Every household will live within a 10-minute walk of a park
  • Raising awareness and building a culture of sustainability in the public service sector
  • Embed sustainability education within the curriculum for students to start taking action


  • Quadruple solar energy deployment by 2025, including covering the roof-tops of HDB blocks with solar panels
  • Invest in water research and development, to half the energy required to produce desalinated water
  • Reduce landfill sent waste by the amount per capita per day is 20% by 2026, intending to reach 30% by 2030 – e.g. redistributing food that is safe to eat
  • Adopting electric cars

May: Mental Health Month

May is commemorated as the month to boost awareness of many mental or behavioral health issues to reduce the stigma of numerous bad experiences. But why May? Well, there is history behind that. May was established as Mental Health Month in 1949. This was created to extend awareness for the importance of mental health and wellness and to celebrate recovery from mental illness (Youth.GOV, 2020). 

Identifying Mental Illness

Every mental illness has their own unique symptoms, but common signs include the following (NAMI, 2021): 

  • Excessive worrying or fear
  • Feeling excessively sad or low
  • Confused thinking or problems concentrating and learning
  • Extreme mood changes, including uncontrollable “highs” or feelings of euphoria
  • Prolonged or strong feelings of irritability or anger
  • Avoiding friends and social activities

Gen Z and Mental Health

Several studies have come to the conclusion that Generation Z is the most depressed generation. However, Gen Z is also “the most likely to get treatment for anxiety and depression through counseling and therapy.” Some positive statistics include, “37% of Gen Z reported that they received help from a psychologist or other mental health expert, which is more than any previous generation” (AECF, 2021).  

A massive factor of Generation Z being the most depressed generation is social media. Social media has a lot of negative impacts on mental health. According to a study executed by The University of Pennsylvania, high usage of social media apps such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook increases our feelings of loneliness (Helpguide, 2020).

Is Awareness on Mental Health Increasing?

Despite numerous people suffering from mental health, a lot of individuals are still unaware of their condition. 

On the other hand, there are some positives: 

  1. Public attitudes to mental ill-health have improved by about 10%, and people receiving mental health services have reported a drop in discrimination, which is really excellent news (Sheffield Halam University, 2017). 
  2. Campaigns that encourage mental health have been gaining positive traction, especially by encouraging influencers or pop-stars speak about their experiences, as the audience resonates well with their role models. For instance, Demi Lovato launched Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health to assist struggling patients with mental illnesses. To better encourage patients to take action on their mental health, she teamed up with five mental-health organizations (Huffpost, 2017).

Okay… But How Do I Improve My Mental Health? 

There are several methods and steps you can take to enhance and improve your mental health. 

  1. Comics help people with anxiety and one advantage is their relatability to the characters. Reading about these characters could be a great way to remind yourself to be positive and improve your psychological state. After all, superheroes are meant to be role models (The Comic Health, 2018).
  2. Music does wonders! Classical music helps boost mental health and well-being. Whilst, listening to orchestral music helps boost your mood in times of worry (Classic FM, 2020). 
  3. Yoga reduces the impact of excessive stress and should be helpful for both anxiety and depression. Other self-soothing techniques like meditation, relaxation, exercise, or maybe socializing with friends are highly encouraged (Harvard Medical School, 2020).

Ramadan Self Care For The Mind, Body, and Soul

What is Ramadan? 

Ramadan is an auspicious month filled with spiritual reflection, giving back to the community and fasting from dawn to sunset (BBC, 2021).  

Why is Ramadan important? 

During the holy month of Ramandan, one is far more conscious of their privileges: “by abstaining from things that people tend to take for granted (such as water), it is believed, one may be moved to reflect on the purpose of life and grow closer to the creator and sustainer of all existence,” (Jain, 2019). 

Ramadan during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Compared to 2020, many countries are easing restrictions during Ramadan. Nevertheless, the fight is not over yet, there are still safety measures in place for instance, large gatherings are restricted. 

Coping with emerging challenges during COVID-19 has led to pandemic fatigue, denoting that one is feeling restless, irritable, lacking motivation, difficulty concentrating on tasks, withdrawing from socializing or changes in eating and sleeping habits (WDG Public Health, 2020). This will amplify during Ramadan due to fasting, and therefore, practicing self care is imperative.

Ramadan Self Care for the Mind

  1. It takes 28 days to develop a new habit (Guardian, 2009). During the holy month of Ramadan direct your energy towards realistic goal setting to better improve your well-being. This will also encourage you to view Ramadan in a positive way, as opposed to perceiving the month as a challenge, after all “fasting is really about mind over matter” (Guardian, 2016).
  2. Sleep has more impact on one’s health than nutrition and exercise combined therefore, “try to sleep for at least 4 hours at night after Iftar, before waking for Suhoor and Fajr – and return to sleep for a couple of hours before getting up for the day ahead” (Cleveland Clinic, 2021).

Ramadan Self Care for the Body

  1. It is recommended to continue exercising for instance, lesser strenuous activities such as yoga and walking. 
  2. During suhoor, opt for healthier meals and consciously plan your dishes for the week. For instance, “consume plenty of high fibre foods, such as wholegrains, high fibre cereals, bran, fruit and vegetables, lentils, dried fruits and nuts, is highly recommended (British Nutrition Foundation, 2021). 
  3. Drink plenty of fluids and hydrate yourself!

Ramadan Self Care for the Soul

Coco Veda’s Mental Health Guide

Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health. Close to 1 billion people are living with a mental disorder, 3 million people die every year from the harmful use of alcohol and one person dies every 40 seconds by suicide…” – (WHO, 2020)

What is Mental Health?

Mental Health is an integral component of health and impacts our emotional, psychological and social well-being (WHO, 2018).

 There are two major factors that cause mental health issues, some examples include:

  • Biological factors – genetics, brain injury, substance abuse, poor nutrition, hormonal changes etc.
  • Environmental factors – sleep deprivation, social stigma, lack of self care, toxic relationships, social isolation, financial difficulties etc.

Mental Health Symptoms

 Be mindful that signs and symptoms may vary for each individual. Below are some indications to detect mental health: 

  • Drastic mood swings 
  • Inconsistent lifestyle habits e.g. eating / sleeping patterns
  • Inability to concentrate for long periods of time due to tiredness, low energy or sleeping problems e.g. ADHD 
  • Constant anxiety and paranoia
  • Withdrawal from friends and family  
  • Suicidal tendencies

Tips to Boost Your Mental Health

In order to get better and not have your mental illness control you, there are multiple natural solutions for mental health problems.

“Meditation trains the brain to achieve sustained focus, and to return to that focus when negative thinking, emotions, and physical sensations intrude — which happens a lot when you feel stressed and anxious,” says Dr. John W. Denninger from a Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. 

Mindfulness meditation is a practice where you shift your energy from negative vibes, stress and anxiety to “focus on being intensely aware of what you are sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgement” (Mayo Clinic, 2020). On a whole, this improves self-esteem and self-awareness.  

Some of the simple mindfulness exercises revolve around your breathing, which can be done by chanting a mantra or silently repeating a word to help you focus. According to David Foley, Founder of Unify Cosmos a Meditation Center in Oklahama as a result of this exercise you will reach a state of complete stillness and stability (Mayo Clinic, 2020)

Physical exercise pumps up your endorphins, which is a feel good neurotransmitter in your body. These chemicals get released into the body which triggers a positive feeling. This helps you to feel less stressed/upset, therefore, avoiding any major mental illnesses.

A positive social and emotional support system provides a sense of belonging, improves self-confidence, helps to reduce stress and anxiety. It is imperative to not bottle up emotions, because through the sharing of experiences you can also seek helpful advice and feedback. However, if you are afraid of speaking to someone face to face, platforms such as Chat Health, Better Help, Talkspace etc. can support you to express yourself in a safe, secure and confidential manner. 

At the same time, it is extremely important to also create your own internal support system by becoming more self-reliant and increasing self-love. One simple way to do this, would be to create a positivity jar filled with positive notes for example, quotes, memories and the things you appreciate about yourself.

Unhealthy food leads to massive mood fluctuations which eventually cause mood disorders such as Anxiety and Depression. Dr. Barish-Wreden from Sutter Medical Foundation shares that “studies have shown a reduction in depression of 40 to 60 percent when people are eating the right food, which is a better outcome than most medication”. 

According to Harvard Health, a traditional diet reduces the risk of depression by 25 to 35 percent (Selhub, 2015) which is centred around fruits, vegetables, whole grains, herbs, spices, fish, seafood and minimal amounts of animal protein. The above foods release “feel good” chemicals such as tryptophan and serotonin.
